Like one of my photography idols, I loathe the idea of setting up a scene to photograph. Even when I think I’ve got it down it never turns out the way I planned. Some of my favorite images have been by mistake or at least by surprise. Our eyes don’t see the same way our lens does and to further complicate things – each lens represents a different perspective. We can imagine how we want an image to look but until we sit down to process it there’s no real way to know unless you’re looking for the light first. Then you might have a clue where the image is going.
These days I just try to see what I see … understanding that the light is everything. The word photography literally means drawing (or writing) with light. Photography is based on the light first and everything else second.
